Social History: A vital detail in this sketch is the inclusion of the Gullah flower vendor on the sidewalk, identifiable by the basket balanced on her head. These women were a cornerstone of Charleston’s social history, selling "bouquets of the season" in the historic district. Verner was famous for her respectful and frequent depiction of these vendors, who were often her friends and neighbors in the French Quarter.

Scene: The Dock Street Theatre is famous for being America’s first building dedicated solely to theater (1736). This card captures the building after its major 1937 restoration by the WPA. Elizabeth O'Neill Verner, the artist, was a central figure in the Charleston Renaissance, a movement that transformed the city's crumbling ruins into an artistic and tourist destination.
