Social History: Following Japan's surrender in August 1945, thousands of American service members remained stationed on the captured island hubs of the Marianas awaiting deployment back home to the States:
"28 Dec - Dear Frank— This Christmas Card is a little late but thought you might be interested in the card. It was taken at foot of hill up to the 148th. My brother Carl was here for a month before leaving for the states as skipper of his LST. Green & I are the only old timers left around the 148th now. It isn't the same as before. No spirit now. I have command of the 217th since Marshall went home. I'm also WPBC San Eng since Major Hagberg left (also Bognen). See where I may go to Major in reserve after collecting my $300 mustering out as a Captain. Hope I can be out by March. Will lose all but 2 men out of the 2 units soon. Should de-activate the 115th in Jan. Hope every thing is well with you and your family, Frank. Best Holiday wishes. John"
