Vintage Postcard 1936 Shaws Garden St Louis MO Interior Greenhouse Bonds Slogan
Social History: The message is from Mae Perry to Mr. & Mrs. Otto Boesel and Mildred in Chicago, Ill. Sent just before Labor Day, Mae writes:
"Having a lovely visit with my Mother the weather is so nice & cool... expect to be back Labor Day."
This provides a sweet snapshot of Depression-era family travel and the relief of a "cool" Missouri summer.
Scene: A lush, color-saturated view of the Interior of the Green House at Shaw’s Garden (now the Missouri Botanical Garden) in St. Louis, Missouri.
Postal History: The card features a crisp 1936 Saint Louis machine cancellation. Most notably, the cancel includes a patriotic postal slogan: "BUY U.S. SAVINGS BONDS — ASK YOUR POSTMASTER." This is a fantastic piece of pre-WWII propaganda, encouraging citizens to invest in government bonds during the Great Depression.
The 1927 brick bungalow house, which was delivered to still stands in Chicago today!
