Personal story: I sourced this piece from a woman living in village north of Budapest, who inherited it from her mother. It was created during the 1970s or 1980s when folk art cooperatives were most active in producing this decorative style.

Visual Details

  • Size: 24 cm square, weight is approximately 30 grams.
  • Condition: Excellent vintage quality. Consistent with its 40 or 50-year history, the base felt has a soft, aged patina. Apart from a minor loose thread (pictured), the structural integrity and appliqué remain in great condition
  • Appliqué: The surface features intricate, layered wool felt cutouts in a deep mahogany tone, showcasing traditional "cifra" folk patterns with precisely stitched outlines.
  • Scalloped Edge: The square border is finished with a rhythmic, hand-cut scalloped edge, a classic detail that provides a soft, decorative frame to the dense felt work.
  • Design: A powerful, symmetrical geometric composition makes this a standout statement piece for a rustic coffee table, desk, or wall display.

What is Szűr appliqué? Szűr appliqué is a legendary Hungarian craft where intricate wool shapes are hand-stitched onto heavy felt to create bold, layered masterpieces. Originally used to decorate the spectacular cloaks of 19th-century shepherds, this "cifra" style represents the ultimate status symbol of rural pride and rugged elegance.
