Social History: The sender, Pvt. John Deveney, explicitly identifies his unit as Battery E, 307th Field Artillery. The 307th Field Artillery was a core regiment of the 78th "Lightning" Infantry Division. The unit was activated at Camp Dix, New Jersey, arrived in France during the summer of 1918, and fought in the brutal, pivotal campaigns of the Meuse-Argonne, St. Mihiel, and Lorraine.
