Why are my crystals fading?

Your crystals are fading because of light, heat, or chemicals, which change or damage the color centers in the crystal's structure.

Sunlight has UV rays that may degrade the chemical bonds determining a crystal's color, whether organic or dyed. Heat can change the color centers by fading or darkening the stone. Chemicals like acid or harsh cleaning solutions can also strip the crystal's color.

Some examples of crystals that will fade in the sunlight include:

  • Amethyst

  • Aquamarine

  • Fluorite

  • Rose Quartz

  • Citrine

  • Lapis Lazuli

  • Chrysoprase

  • Calcite

  • Sapphire

All colorful gemstones are subject to fading. Some will fade quickly, and others may take decades to fade. If you are worried, be cautious and place them in indirect light.

Some crystals' color is more resistant than others, depending on their chemical formula. Clear, white, and black crystals are usually safe from fading. Some colored gemstones also have stable color centers that keep them from fading in the sun.

Some examples of crystals that are safe in sunlight include:

  • Clear Quartz

  • Howlite

  • Tourmaline

  • Jet

  • Black Onyx

  • Sunstone

  • Jade

  • Malachite

Do note that if any of the stones above are dyed or heat-treated, they may fade in light, heat, or chemicals. And, although they may not fade in the sunlight, they may become brittle, crack, or break down in high heat.

Will my Obsidian fade?

Obsidian in its pure form is a black volcanic glass. It is relatively stable and will not fade in sunlight. It can, however, lose its shine with prolonged sun.

If you have other varieties of Obsidian, like Rainbow Obsidian, Sheen Obsidian, or Mahogany Obsidian, the mineral inclusions within these crystals can change colors or fade in the sunlight.

How do I prevent my crystals from fading?

To prevent your crystals from fading, store them away from direct sunlight, strong sources of UV light, and heat sources. Look into UV filters for windows and timers for display cabinet lighting. Your best bet is to keep your stones in darkness or indoors in indirect light.

Clean your crystals using gentle methods rather than harsh chemicals to keep their color bright. Avoid exposing crystals to steamy bathrooms or damp environments, as moisture can impact them.

Can I charge my crystals in the sun?

Energetically charging your crystals in the sun infuses them with solar energy. This is a popular method among energy healers who are seeking that powerful, yang energy.

If cleansing or charging a photosensitive crystal in the sun, do so briefly to avoid extended exposure to direct sunlight. Short spurts of sunshine also help maintain the structure of your crystal, which is subject to weathering outdoors.

If you notice fading, charge your crystals under moonlight instead. This is a superior option to sunlight for vulnerable stones like Amethyst and Rose Quartz.
