Historical Significance: This authentic Real Photo Postcard (RPPC), copyrighted in 1938, features the Flume Gorge in Franconia Notch, New Hampshire. The image was captured by photographer C.T. Bodwell, the long-time director of the Flume Reservation, during a pivotal year in the region’s history. 1938 saw the Great New England Hurricane, which forever changed the landscape of the White Mountains.

This photograph preserves the gorge’s rugged granite walls and early wooden boardwalk system that allowed travelers to experience the "raw power" of the mountain brook.

RPPC: The crisp "silver halide" photographic quality provides much greater depth and detail than the more common lithograph  cards of the era. You can clearly see the intricate layering of the granite walls and the sturdy construction of the boardwalk. Being sold exclusively at the Flume Reservation, this card served as a high-end souvenir for Depression-era travelers visiting the "Switzerland of America."
