This note is an extraordinary piece of World War I military history. Issued on August 12, 1914—just days after Germany entered WWI—it belongs to the emergency mobilization print runs. The Imperial government hoarded silver and gold coins for the war effort, leading to a massive coin shortage. These "Loan Bank Notes" (Darlehenskassenscheine) were printed to replace the missing metal pocket change.
