Social History: This card reproduces a sketch dated May 2, 1937, created just days after the devastating aerial bombing of the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. The horse is a central, agonizing figure in the final mural, representing the suffering of innocent victims.

The Casón del Buen Retiro served as the home for Guernica upon its return to Spain in 1981 until it was moved to the Reina Sofía in 1992, making this card a piece of that specific transitional museum history.

Scene: "Cabeza de caballo (I)" (Horse's head), a preparatory study for his 1937 masterpiece, Guernica.

Size: Continental 6 x 4"

Era: Circa 1980s–early 1990s

Type: High-quality offset lithograph on textured cardstock (Card number 453)

Publisher: FISA I.G.

Condition: Light corner bumping. Unposted back.
