Social History: Sent to the Bakers in Suffolk England:

"Arrived in Bavaria on Sunday and spent one day watching The Passion Play in Oberammergau. Then moved on to Austria, visiting the castle overleaf and Innsbruck which is really attractive. Now truly in the Tyrol - the mountain scenery is quite superb. Sadly, no chance to do any walking. Anne & David."

The mention of the Oberammergau Passion Play is particularly significant. Performed once every ten years since 1634 to fulfill a vow made during the bubonic plague.

Scene: Iconic view of Neuschwanstein Castle, arguably the most famous fortress in the world. Commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1869, the castle was designed as a romantic homage to the Middle Ages and served as the primary inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Postal: A clear circular date stamp from Kitzbühel, a renowned Austrian alpine resort, dated 19 July 2000, and a distinct blue "Schloss Neuschwanstein" swan handstamp applied at the castle itself.
