Social History: The handwritten message from Julia to her mother, Mrs. C.C. Bukey in McPherson, Kansas, provides a gritty, real-world look at life in the Ozarks during the winter of '61:

"6 Below zero here. How did your test at Halstead come out? ... Stark fruit tree & shrub selling is slow."

The mention of selling Stark trees provides a link to one of the most famous agricultural companies in American history, Stark Bros. Nurseries.

Scene: A natural color photograph of the Missouri State Capitol Building in Jefferson City. Issued in the early 1960s, it captures the majestic "Carthage stone" architecture of the Capitol against a vivid blue sky.

Postal History: The card features a bold, circular postmark from Summersville, MO. Summersville is a small Ozark town notable for straddling the line between Texas and Shannon Counties in Missouri.
