Social History: While the front of the card shows a sad, dramatic breakup, the sender didn't pay attention to the gloomy theme at all. Instead, she used the back of the card to write a joyful, glowing letter to her friend Ruth, wishing her the happiest days of her life and bragging about how wonderful her own "few months of married life" have been.

Addressed to Miss Ruth Davis on West Patrick Street in Frederick, Maryland:

"Dear Ruth, We extend our best wishes to you this the happiest days of your life. & more I am sure there isn't one any happier than myself just few months of married life. From Mamie F."

Scene: "What's the use of loving if you can't love all the time." It shows a gentleman holding his hat and a suitcase, looking back at a woman weeping into her handkerchief.

This phrase was a lyric from a highly popular American song of that era. In the context of the card, it implies that their romance was unstable—perhaps they fought too much, or his affection was only temporary. He is leaving because he feels a relationship isn't worth the effort if the love isn't consistent and "all the time."

Postal: It features the incredibly famous Jamestown Celebration / 1607–1907 illustrated flag cancel, marking the Tercentennial Exposition.

Size: Standard 3.5 x 5.5"
