Antique Banknote 1923 Old Weimar Germany 20K Mark Hyperinflation Reichsbanknote
This artifact is a relic from one of the most volatile economic collapses in human history. Following World War I and facing massive war reparations under the Treaty of Versailles, the German government resorted to printing unbacked paper money (Papiermark).
By early 1923, inflation was spiraling out of control. A note of this high denomination, 20,000 Marks, went from being an immense fortune to virtually worthless pocket change within months. By the end of 1923, millions and billions of Marks were needed just to buy a single loaf of bread, making this note a profound teaching tool for twentieth-century history
