This authentic overprinted Uruguayan banknote marks a historical transition of monetary reform during the nation's severe inflationary crisis. It serves as a fascinating conversational addition for world currency collectors, Latin American history buffs, or anyone seeking a unique piece of numismatic ephemera.

In 1975, the government of Uruguay instituted a massive currency reform to battle hyperinflation, introducing the Nuevo Peso to replace the original Peso Moneda Nacional at a steep 1,000-to-1 conversion rate. Rather than wasting existing unissued paper assets, the central bank stamped a bold, circular emergency overprint reading "N$ 0,50 / LEY Nº 14.316" directly over the left watermark panel of the older 500 Pesos notes.

The front features General José Gervasio Artigas, the revered national hero and founding father of Uruguay, and the back features the majestic Rincón del Bonete Hydroelectric Dam spanning across the Río Negro.
