This is a rare, historically significant postcard documenting the massive Alaska-Juneau Gold Mining Mill built directly into the steep mountainside of Mount Roberts in Juneau, Alaska. Operating heavily from the 1910s until its closure in 1944, the AJ Mill was a global marvel of industrial engineering. It was famed for pioneering large-scale, low-grade gold ore processing.

Written by an early tourist, the narrative provides a first-hand account of the strict corporate security surrounding the facility. It also acts as an industrial engineering field note:

"This brings to mind my greatest disappointment—not being able to go through this mill—not open to visitors—except by permit—and is a permit hard to get. So I had to look from the outside, and explain to my fellow passengers what it looked like inside. As with all such mills the force of gravity is made as much use of as is possible. The mine is quite some distance up and over the ridge—and the ore is brought by conveyors."
