Social History: This card captures a masterpiece of the Late German Renaissance. Martin Schaffner was the leading artist of the Ulm school, and this altar is one of his most significant surviving works. The scene depicts the Holy Family in the intricate, gilded "Ulm Style" of woodcarving that flourished just before the Reformation.

Scene: Detail of the Holy Family (Heilige Familie) from the high altar of the choir (Choraltar), completed in 1521. You can clearly see the fine architectural gothic tracery framing the figures.
