Social History: Traveler's note from "Julia" describing her journey through the Alps:
"It’s very beautiful. Am on a train now going from Bern to Lucerne. We go to Rapallo, Italy tomorrow and then to Rome. We fly... for Boston on Sunday 9/11..the train jiggles"

Postal History: Postally used from Luzern on September 3, 1956. Features a collectible Red Cross charity machine cancellation. The machine slogan "Helft dem Internationalen Komitee vom Roten Kreuz" ("Help the International Committee of the Red Cross") documents a major humanitarian drive from the mid-1950s. Franked with a 25-cent red Helvetia mountain-landscape definitive stamp.
