Social History: Addressed to Miss Viola Swining, 1034 E 11th St. N., Portland, Oregon:

"11-15-13 Dear Daughters V + V, Will scribble you a card. Am awful sorry to hear of your bad luck. Mr. Burke ran into Sturgeon's wagon last evening and demolished the wagon but did not hurt the boy or horses. Hank Brown committed suicide last Sunday on top of the Burkhalter Bank. Some rain since you left but fine today. Got a letter from Lola a few days ago. C.B. is in Oregon, took 160 a. of land, they will move out there. Write from Pa."

Scene: The front shows a playful family moment where a younger boy in overalls is helping his mother (or another family member) climb out through the open window of the building, while a man in high-waisted trousers stands nearby watching the transition. The high resolution of the real photograph beautifully preserves this brief moment of daily life, along with the distinct wood clapboard siding texture and dappled leaf shadows on the house wall.
