Amazonite (or Amazon Stone)
is the only blue-green crystal and the only gem variety of Microcline Feldspar. Microcline is the most common Feldspar. It is used in ceramics and as a mild abrasive.
Like
Moonstone, Amazonite has a distinctive sheen caused by thin layers of Orthoclase and Albite. This iridescence is also known as Schiller Sheen and opalescence.
It was previously thought that the blue-green color of Amazonite was caused by copper like so many other blue and green stones, but they later found that the color is caused by lead and water. Amazonite is a 6 – 6.5 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness.
Amazonite is often found with Smoky Quartz, Orthoclase and Albite in coarse granite or pegmatites. Pegmatites are formed when magma in the earth cools and coarse grained rocks (granite) form within the earth’s surface. These pegmatites of coarse granite can contain unique minerals like Amazonite.
Although it may have been named for the Amazon river, Amazonite is not found in the Amazon. Amazonite is found in Colorado, Russia, Madagascar, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Australia and Namibia.
Energetically:
- Amazonite helps protect against electromagnetic pollution when placed by computers, TV’s, microwaves and cell phones.
- Amazonite balances the masculine and feminine energies that every one of us possesses.
- Amazonite helps you to see both points of view to any problem – great to place in meeting areas.
- Clears the path for creative expression when placed or worn at the Throat.
- Alleviates worry, fear and aggravation when rubbed as a worry stone.
- Drink as a gem elixir to help absorb calcium and thereby alleviate tooth decay, osteoporosis, etc.
